The E6 oncoprotein from high-risk papilloma viruses is required for the development of several types of cancers, such as those of the cervix, larynx, and skin. E6 exerts its oncogenic effects through the deregulation of several cellular pathways. By using a transgenic mouse model expressing the E6 oncoprotein in skin, it was found by immunofluorescence that this viral protein gradually induces the accumulation of β-catenin in the nucleus of epithelial cells, suggesting that E6 is able to induce canonical Wnt pathway.
